Avril Ramona Lavigne was born in Belleville, Ontario on September 27, 1984. Her father named her Avril (the French word for April). When Lavigne was two years old, he and her mother recognized her daughter’s vocal abilities and sang “Jesus Loves Me” on the way home from church.

Lavigne won a radio contest in 1999 to perform with Canadian singer Shania Twain in front of 20,000 people at the Corel Centre in Ottawa. Twain and Lavigne performed Twain’s song “What Made You Say That,” and Lavigne told Twain that she wanted to be a “famous singer.”Lavigne was discovered by local folksinger Stephen Medd while performing with the Lennox Community Theatre. He asked her to sing background vocals on his song “Touch the Sky” from his 1999 album Quinte Spirit. In 2000, she sang on “Temple of Life” and “Two Rivers” from his follow-up album, My Window to You.
