The Soil is a Soweto-based South African a cappella group created in 2003 by lead singer Ntsika Ngxanga, beatboxer Luphindo, and vocalist Buhlebendalo Mda. The band’s self-titled debut album The Soil (2011) was certified platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).
It began in 2003, when all of the members met during jam sessions at Tikelo Secondary School. The group was called ‘Particles of the Soil’ back then and had more than four members. As the years went, various members left due to other commitments. The group was reduced to four members in 2010: Buhlebendalo Mda (singer), Ntsika Ngxanga (primary composer and vocalist), Luphindo (beatboxer and vocalist), and Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba, also known as Samthing Soweto. Mdolomba participated in the recording of the group’s first album, but owing to contractual disagreements and creative differences, Samkelo chose to depart and join the modern jazz group The Fridge, where he served as lead vocalist.
