Full Biography
Thandiswa Mazwai was born in the Eastern Cape in 1976, the year of the Soweto Uprising, and spent his childhood nearly exclusively in Soweto, Johannesburg, during the 1980s apartheid township violence. Her parents, Belede and Thami Mazwai were both journalists and anti-apartheid political activists, and she recalls a house full of books, articles, and heavy with political discussions. Her artistic vision was shaped by her surroundings.

Thandiswa Mazwai is Nomsa Mazwai’s sister, and they enjoy a healthy sibling rivalry. She also goes as Thandiswa Mazwai Belede, after her mother Belede, who died in 1992 at the age of 34. She is also the poet Ntsiki Mazwai’s sister, as well as an author, social activist, producer, and blogger.
