Parents and siblings
Thabo Mbeki and Olive Mpahlwa are the parents of Monwabisi Kwanda Mbeki. His father, Thabo Mbeki was a political figure and statesman . He served as that nation’s second president from 1999 until 2008. He was born in Idutywa, in what is now the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, on June 18, 1942.
Mbeki’s family was politically active when he was growing up, thus he was exposed to anti-apartheid activism at a young age. He had his schooling in South Africa, England, and the USSR before joining the African National Congress as a young man (ANC). Throughout the apartheid era, Mbeki was frequently caught and jailed for his political activities; eventually, in the 1960s, he escaped to exile.
While in exile, Mbeki continued to be involved in the ANC and worked to end apartheid.
As a member of the ANC, he held a number of positions, including Chief Representative in Lusaka, Zambia, and representation at the UN. The discussions that led to Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and the end of apartheid in South Africa also included him as a key role.
Following the end of apartheid, Mbeki returned to South Africa, where the following year he was elected the country’s deputy president. He was chosen to succeed Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s president in 1999. During his presidency, Mbeki focused on improving the country’s economy, educational system, and the healthcare system. He was involved in both national and international politics.
Mbeki resigned as president of South Africa in 2008 after failing in a struggle for power within the ANC. He maintained his political and public activity after leaving office and continued to be actively involved in South African and African matters.
Thabo Mbeki passed away on October 24, 2021, at the age of 79. He is recognized as a bold leader who helped South Africa move from apartheid to democracy and had a significant influence on the development of the country and the continent.
