David Mulovhedzi, Beverly Bryer, producers Andrew Kay, David Vigo, and Cliff Hocking founded the Soweto Gospel Choir in Soweto, South Africa, in 2002. The more than 30-person group combines elements of American popular music, reggae, African gospel, and black spirituals. The band debuted during the first of the 46664 Nelson Mandela performances, and since then, it has gone on multiple foreign tours.

Their albums Blessed, African Spirit, and Freedom, which were released in 2006, 2007, and 2018, respectively, all won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album.
