Full Biography
Miriam Makeba was born on March 4, 1932, as the sixth child of her mother and the sole child of her father in the black slum of Prospect, close to Johannesburg. Caswell Makeba, her Xhosa father, was a teacher who passed away when she was six years old. Christina Makeba, a domestic worker who was of Swazi descent, had previously divorced her first husband when she met and later wed Caswell.
Makeba later revealed that her mother had been informed that any future pregnancies may be fatal before Makeba was even conceived. After challenging labor and delivery, it appeared unlikely that either Miriam or her mother would survive.
