Full Biography
Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s mother, Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu, was born in 1900 and passed away in 1984. She was the daughter of the former Zulu King Dinuzulu and the sister of the incumbent King Solomon kaDinuzulu. Magogo was a woman of considerable power and influence, and in 1923, she became the tenth – and ultimately the principal – wife of Buthelezi’s father, Mathole Buthelezi.
Over the course of their marriage, Mathole would take a total of 40 wives, of which Princess Magogo was the most significant. The Zulu people highly revered Princess Magogo and she was a driving force in the development of the Buthelezi clan.
She was an active and vocal advocate for the rights of Zulu women, and her legacy still lives on today. As the mother of Mangosuthu Buthelezi, she laid the foundations of the legacy of the Buthelezi family, and they still felt her influence on the politics and culture of South Africa.
