Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s best-known sons. Johnny Clegg is a singer, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist, and musical activist whose irresistible crossover music, a vivid blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has sprung onto the international stage and shattered all borders in his own country. In France, where he has a large following, he is known as Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu.
Born in 1953 in Bacup, near Rochdale, England, to an English father and a Zimbabwean mother, he was raised in his mother’s homeland of Zimbabwe. When Johnny was seven years old, she married a South African journalist and moved to South Africa. Johnny Clegg spent two years in Zambia with his parents when he was nine years old, returning to South Africa when he was eleven. Johnny was exposed to a larger cultural perspective than his friends because of his mother (a cabaret and jazz singer) and stepfather (a crime reporter), who took him into the townships at a young age.
