Fatima Meer was born in the Grey Streets of Durban, South Africa, into a middle-class family of nine children, where her father, Moosa Ismail Meer, a newspaper editor of The Indian Views, instilled in her a sense of the country’s racial inequality. Rachel Farrell, Moosa Ismail Meer’s second wife, was her mother. Fatima Meer’s mother was an orphan of Jewish and Portuguese ancestry. Fatima Meer became Muslim and changed her name to Amina. She raised £1000 for famine assistance in Bengal, India, when she was 16 years old in 1944.
