Gavin Rain is a South African modern artist who works largely in acrylic and is best recognized for his Neo-Pointillist style paintings. Gavin Rain was asked to participate in the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011 by Fabio Anselmi, co-curator of the Costa Rica pavilion. Rain created a 2m x 2m neo-pointillist portrait of Burmese opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi for the occasion. Each point or dot on the piece represents a country. Rain was chosen for the Costa Rican pavilion before the South African pavilion (which was making its debut) was unveiled, amid some debate over the curator’s choices.
