Bridgette Radebe’s Siblings: Meet Patrice Motsepe

Full Biography

Patrice Motsepe was born to Kgosi Augustine Motsepe, a Tswana chief from the Mmakau branch who had previously been a schoolteacher and later a small businessman as the owner of a Spaza shop popular with mine workers. Motsepe learned basic business principles from his father at this shop, as well as firsthand experience with mining.

Patrice Motsepe became the first black partner in the law firm Bowman Gilfillan in 1994, the same year Nelson Mandela was elected as South Africa’s first black president. While the new government began to promote black empowerment and entrepreneurship, Motsepe founded Future Mining, which provided contract mining services such as cleaning gold dust from inside mine shafts for the Vaal Reefs Gold mine and implemented a worker remuneration system that included a low base salary plus a profit-sharing bonus.
