Hugh Masekela’s parents: Meet Thomas Selema Masekela

Full Biography

Hugh Masekela was born in the Witbank township of KwaGuqa (now named Emalahleni), South Africa, to health inspector and sculptor Thomas Selena Masekela and social worker Pauline Bowers Masekela. Barbara Masekela, his younger sister, is a poet, schoolteacher, and ANC activist.

Hugh Masekela began singing and playing the piano as a toddler and was mostly raised by his grandmother, who managed an illegal tavern for miners. Hugh Masekela began playing the trumpet at the age of 14 after viewing the 1950 film Young Man with a Horn (in which Kirk Douglas portrays a character modeled after American jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke).
