Full Biography
Hugh Masekela was a world-famous flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, vocalist, and outspoken political voice who stayed strongly connected at home even as his international career flourished. In 1939, he was born in the South African town of Witbank. Father Trevor Huddleston, a well-known advocate for equal rights in South Africa, gave Masekela a trumpet when he was 14 years old, and the Huddleston Jazz Band was founded soon after.
Masekela developed his now-signature Afro-Jazz sound in the late 1950s during a period of intense creative collaboration, most notably performing in Todd Matshikiza’s 1959 musical King Kong and, shortly thereafter, as a member of the now-legendary South African group, the Jazz Epistles (featuring the classic line-up of Kippie Moeketsi, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Jonas Gwangwa).
