Selema Masekela was born in Los Angeles, the son of a Haitian mother and Hugh Masekela, a South African jazz musician. Selema Masekela is also Nathan Gonzalez’s older half-brother on Survivor: Cook Islands. Selema Masekela grew up on Staten Island, New York, in the same elementary school as rapper Method Man, and in Carlsbad, California, where he attended Carlsbad High School. Masekela and Jason Bergh co-founded Berkela Motion Pictures. Masekela’s upbringing brought him to Southern California as a teenager, where he was first exposed to surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.
