Full Biography
Miriam Makeba was born on March 4, 1932, in the black township of Prospect, near Johannesburg, as the sole child of her father and the sixth of her mother. Her Xhosa father, Caswell Makeba, was a teacher who died when she was six years old. Christina Makeba, her Swazi mother, was a domestic worker who had already divorced her first husband and met and married Caswell shortly after.

Makeba later revealed that her mother had been advised that any future pregnancy could be fatal before she was conceived. Miriam and her mother did not appear to have a chance of survival following traumatic labor and delivery. Miriam’s grandmother, who was there at the birth, frequently whispered “uzenzile,” a Xhosa phrase that means “you brought this on yourself,” to Miriam’s mother during her recuperation, inspiring her to name her daughter “Zenzile.”
