Biography & Wikipedia
With a father who worked as a miner, four brothers, and seven sisters, Vavi was born on a Hanover, Northern Cape farm. Before his baptism, his date of birth is unknown, but some sources claim Vavi was born on 20th December 1962. He was a child laborer who sought work on nearby farms.
In 1987, Vavi was employed in the Klerksdorp and Orkney gold mining areas. While working at Vaal Reefs Mine, he joined the National Union of Mineworkers. Due to a protracted miners’ strike that ruined the Chamber of Mines, he lost his job with AngloGold in 1987. He then became a volunteer at COSATU.
Years after, he became the general secretary of the Congress of the South African Trade Union (COSATU), the country’s largest trade union federation. According to some online sources, Vavi was also the Millennium Labor Council’s vice-chairperson, established in 1997 to facilitate social dialogue and cooperation between South Africa’s labor, business, and government sectors. He has been prominent in South African politics and labor activism, advocating for workers’ rights, economic justice, and democracy.
