Zwelinzima Vavi is a former general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the Millennium Labour Council’s vice-chairperson.
He was appointed COSATU’s Western Transvaal regional secretary in 1988. He was appointed national organizing secretary in 1992. From 1993 to 1999, he was COSATU’s deputy general secretary.
Vavi was the focal point of the four-month negotiation that preceded the 1997 Jobs Summit. He worked on the International Labour Organization’s globalization commission.
