William repeats this process painstakingly, giving each alteration to the drawing a quarter-second to two-second screen time.
A single drawing will be revised and filmed in this manner till the end of a scene. These palimpsest-like drawings are later shown as finished works of art alongside the movie. Between 1989 and 2003, Kentridge created a series of nine short films, which he eventually collected under the title 9 Drawings for Projection.
