Wayne van Niekerk, Wayde’s father, competed in high jumping in high school.
He was married to the intelligent Odessa Krause, a graduate of Ned Doman High School in Athlone. In Scottsville High in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, she finished her education.
Wayde van Niekerk is the son of Wayne van Niekerk and the sprinter Odessa Swarts. Because he was born too soon, he needed a blood transfusion.
Odessa lit up Athlone Stadium during the sporting isolation with her 100- and 200-meter runs. On the grass track, she crushed South Easter of Cape Town to set new provincial records in the 100 and 200 meters.
