Walter Whall Battiss was a South African artist best recognized as the inventor of the “Fook Island” concept. Battiss was a founding member of the New Group, a loose association of well-known contemporary European and American artists. Battiss was unique among them in that he was from the colonies and had not studied in either Europe or North America. He first visited Europe in 1938.
