Steve Biko was a South African activist who pioneered the idea of Black Consciousness in the late 1960s. Steve Biko was born on December 18, 1946. In 1968, he established the South African Students Organisation (SASO) to defend the interests of Black students at the then-University of Natal (later KwaZulu-Natal). SASO was formed in direct response to what Biko perceived as the National Union of South African Students’ failure to represent the demands of Black students.
