Full Biography
Robert Sobukwe was born in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape Province, as the youngest child of Hubert and Angelina Sobukwe. Sobukwe’s Xhosa mother worked as a domestic servant in white families while his Lesotho father worked as a general shop clerk and part-time woodcutter. Robert Sobukwe grew up in a low-income family and attended primary education at a local Methodist Mission. Sobukwe proceeded and eventually completed his secondary school at the Healdtown Institute, which offered all pupils a Methodist Christian and liberal arts education.
