Pistorius was qualified to compete in both below-the-knee amputee and non-disabled sprint events. He became the tenth athlete to achieve so by competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Due to a congenital defect, he was born lacking both fibulae and the outside of both feet. He barely had 11 months, therefore both of his feet had to be removed.
Full Biography
Pistorius attempted to compete in international tournaments available to athletes without impairments after winning the Paralympic gold medal, but the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) vehemently objected, claiming that his prosthetic limbs gave him an unfair advantage. In this legal dispute, Pistorius won.
Pistorius made history at the 2011 World Athletics Championships by becoming the first amputee to win a non-disabled world track medal. Pistorius entered the 2012 Olympics as the first athlete with two amputees.
