Pistorius had access to both non-disabled and below-the-knee amputee sprint events. His participation in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games made him the tenth athlete to do so.
He was born without the outside of both feet and both fibulae due to a congenital anomaly. When he was just 11 months old, both of his feet had to be amputated.

Pistorius tried to compete in non-disabled international tournaments after winning the Paralympic gold medal, but the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) vehemently objected, claiming that his prosthetic limbs gave him an unfair advantage. In this court battle, Pistorius won.
Pistorius made history by being the first amputee to take home a non-disabled world track medal at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. Pistorius participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics as the first double-amputee.
