Nonqaphi Nosekeni was his mother, while his father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, was the senior counselor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. When Rolihlahla was 12 years old, his father died, and he became a ward of Jongintaba at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni.
