He was the Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the ANC branch in South Africa’s new Gauteng province during the country’s first post-apartheid election in 1994. He retained that post until September 1997, when ANC Provincial Chairperson Tokyo Sexwale quit and Motshekga was elected to replace him. His election came after a contentious succession battle with numerous rounds of voting: Motshekga overcame Amos Masondo and then, in the last round of voting, defeated Frank Chikane with 343 votes to Chikane’s 179.
