Full Biography
Lindiwe Sisulu’s mother is Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu. Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu was born on 21 October 1918 and died on 2 June 2011. Albertina was a South African anti-apartheid campaigner and the wife of fellow activist Walter Sisulu (1912-2003). Throughout her life, she was lovingly known as “Ma Sisulu” by the South African population. She was ranked 57th in SABC3’s Great South Africans in 2004. She died on June 2, 2011, at the age of 92, at her home in Linden, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Education
She was obligated to assist and provide for her younger brothers and sisters after being orphaned as a teenager. She abandoned her dream to become a teacher and left the Transkei in 1940 to train as a nurse at Johannesburg’s Non-European Hospital, where nurses were paid while in training. She graduated from Mariazell College in 1939 and went on to work as a nurse.

Sisulu died suddenly on the evening of June 2, 2011, at the age of 92, in her home in Linden, Johannesburg, while watching television with her grandkids. According to news accounts, she became ill unexpectedly and began coughing up blood, and paramedics who arrived on the scene were unable to revive her.
