Ismail Meer was born in the little village of Waschbank in Northern Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal). His father was a businessman. When his father’s business failed in 1930, Ismail Chota Meer was compelled to labor at a young age. Meer traveled to Durban to work for an elder brother who produced shirts and to attend school, graduating in 1939 from Sastri College.
