Hugh Masekela was a world-famous flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, vocalist, and outspoken political voice who stayed strongly connected at home even as his international career flourished. In 1939, he was born in the South African town of Witbank. Father Trevor Huddleston, a well-known advocate for equal rights in South Africa, gave Masekela a trumpet when he was 14 years old, and the Huddleston Jazz Band was founded soon after.
