Glenda Gray was the fifth of six children born in the South African gold mine town of Boksburg in 1962. Her father was a mining mechanical engineer, while her mother was a bookkeeper. Boksburg was a low-income, racially separated town under the apartheid government of the time.
Glenda Gray’s family was not typical of the town’s population in that they had black pals. Gray began the UNAIDS PETRA trial in five metropolitan settings in South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda in 1996 to test the efficacy of a shorter anti-retroviral regimen.
