Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is a South African businessman and politician who is the country’s fifth democratically elected president. Ramaphosa, a former anti-apartheid activist, trade union leader, and businessman, is also the president of the African National Congress (ANC). Cyril Ramaphosa became interested in the Ankole cattle breed while visiting Uganda in 2004. The South African government denied him permission to import any of the breed due to insufficient disease control measures in Uganda. Instead, Ramaphosa purchased 43 cows from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and shipped them to Kenya, where the embryos were removed and shipped to South Africa to be transferred to quarantined cows.
Cyril Ramaphosa had 100 Ankole breeding cows at his Ntaba Nyoni farm in Mpumalanga as of August 2017. That same year, Cyril Ramaphosa co-wrote Cattle of the Ages: Stories and Portraits of the Ankole Cattle of Southern Africa.
