Full Biography
He is one of four children in a close-knit family. Chad’s first love was football (he is still a Manchester United supporter), and his competitive personality and will win shined through from an early age. But it was in swimming that he truly excelled. Lindsay Manthey, a teacher at Penzance Primary School, recognized his ability. He began swimming at Seagulls Swimming Club when he was eight years old, under the tutelage of Graham Hill, who is still his coach now.
Bert le Clos may appear to be an unexpected candidate to be the face of 2012 Olympic swimming, but his emotional reaction to his son’s 200m butterfly gold has made him one of the true stars of week one.
Bert, who was spotted gesticulating frantically during and after his son Chad’s thrilling victory over Michael Phelps, was interviewed by the BBC’s Clare Balding shortly after the race.
