South African competitive swimmer Cameron van der Burgh (born 25 May 1988) is also a hedge fund analyst. He is the first home-trained world record holder and Olympic champion male from Africa. He has been wed to Nefeli Valakelis for a long time.
Van der Burgh, being a young boy, attended Glenstantia Primary, but matriculated at Crawford College in 2006. After finishing his swimming career, he was interested in starting his own business and took part-time Financial Management courses at UNISA.
Van der Burgh has won numerous accolades since the London Olympics, including South African Style Icon 2012, GQ 7th Best-Dressed Man 2012, and others, and has since appeared on numerous magazine covers and in South African television programs. He frequently travels the nation giving inspirational speeches and attending gala dinners. He has ties to a few charities and recently used his Olympic winnings to feed impoverished children in Alexandria. Most recently, he was named the ambassador for Steps, a foundation that helps clubfooted children.
Van der Burgh got COVID-19 in March 2020 as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic. Despite “being a healthy individual with strong lungs (no smoking/sport), living a healthy lifestyle, and being young,” he said it was “by far the worst virus” he had ever had.
