Busi Mhlongo was born on October 28, 1947, and died on June 15, 2010. She was a South African singer, dancer, and songwriter who was born Victoria Busisiwe Mhlongo in Inanda, Natal. Flora Phiri is her parent. There is little information about Flora Phiri.
Mhlongo drew on traditional South African musical forms such as Mbaqanga, Maskanda, Marabi, and traditional Zulu, as well as jazz, funk, rock, gospel, rap, opera, reggae, and West African music. Her lyrics convey meaningful truths, and she had a carefree stage presence, even playing barefoot.
In the 1960s, she went by the stage name Vickie; it wasn’t until later that she was known as Busi Mhlongo. Busi Mhlongo was an initiated sangoma, which affected her music greatly.
