In addition to serving as the head of numerous other biomedical organizations throughout his career, Bongani Mayosi was a member of the South African Academy of Science and a former president of the College of Physicians of South Africa.
Mayosi committed suicide on July 27, 2018, after suffering from depression for two years. Mayosi submitted his resignation to the University of Cape Town eight months prior to his passing, but it seems that it was rejected. The FeesMustFall protests, according to Mayosi’s family, were a factor in his deteriorating mental state.
