Phillip Sphambano’s son, Blade Nzimande is a South African politician, sociologist, philosopher, educator, anti-apartheid activist, and Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. Nzimande began his internship in Industrial Psychology in the people department of Tongaat Hulett Sugar Ltd in 1982. There he met Jay Naidoo and began working informally with unions, addressing union seminars on job grading and other concerns. He left his position in 1984.
In June 2017, Nzimande criticized President Zuma, calling his latest Cabinet reshuffle an abuse of authority and renewing calls for him to resign. In an October cabinet reshuffle, President Zuma replaced Nzimande as Minister of Higher Education and Training with Hlengiwe Mkhize.
