Bantubonke Harrington Holomisa, a South African lawmaker and head of the United Democratic Movement, was born on July 25, 1955. Holomisa was born in the Cape Province’s Mqanduli. He enlisted in the Transkei Defense
Corps in 1976, and by 1985, he was a brigadier.
In October 1987, Holomisa compelled Prime Minister of Transkei George Matanzima to resign and go into exile.
In December 1987, Holomisa deposed Matanzima’s replacement, Prime Minister Stella Sigcau, in a bloodless coup. Upon Transkei’s reintegration into the “new” South Africa in 1994, Holomisa took office as that country’s head of state from 1987 to 1994. Shortly after that, he joined the African National Congress (ANC).
According to some online sources, Bantu founded the UDM in 1994 and was later chosen to serve in the South African National Assembly. Holomisa is renowned for supporting democracy, ethical leadership, and open government. A strong opponent of the dominant ANC party, he has also engaged the government in several high-profile judicial disputes over corruption and poor governance.
