Allan Boesak is a South African theologian and political activist best known for his anti-apartheid work alongside Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela. On February 23, 1946, Allan Boesak was born in Kakamas, Northern Cape Province, near South Africa’s eastern border. Allan Boesak’s mother’s strong faith in raising him and his seven siblings after their father died in 1952 inspired him to pursue theological studies.

At the age of 17, Allan Boesak enrolled at the Dutch Reformed Mission Church Theological Seminary at the University of the Western Cape, and in 1968, he became the youngest ordained pastor in Paarl, a town in the middle of Western Cape province. Allan Boesak left South Africa in 1970 to study at the Protestant Theological University in Kampen, the Netherlands, where he got his Doctorate in Theology in 1976.
