Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was born in Zimbabwe in 1898. As a child, he returned to his ancestral home in Groutville since his father was a missionary. Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli received his education at mission schools and at Natal’s Adam’s College, where he later taught until 1936. In response to persistent demands and petitions from his tribe’s elders to return home and lead them, he resigned from teaching that year to become chief of the tribe. Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was not a hereditary leader because his tribe elected its chiefs democratically.
