Alan Knott-Craig (Jnr) was born in Pretoria and attended school there until 1995.
His early education took place at home, where his mother, a certified teacher, ran a kindergarten.
Alan Knott-Craig (Senior), his father, was Senior General Manager of Mobile Communications at Telkom SA before becoming CEO of South African mobile networks Vodacom (1996-2008) and Cell C. (2012-2014).

Alan Knott-Craig returned to South Africa, where he founded Cellfind, one of the country’s first mobile-location-based service providers, in October 2003 and served as CEO until 2005. Alan Knott-Craig was appointed CEO of iBurst in 2006, and he built one of South Africa’s largest wireless broadband networks. He left iBurst in 2009 to relocate to Stellenbosch after the birth of his first daughter. In 2010, Alan Knott-Craig founded and became CEO of World of Avatar, an African app investment firm, and later acquired and became CEO of Mxit, Africa’s largest social network.
