The Ackerman’s chain was founded by Gus Ackerman and two of his army buddies after the First World War. Based on consumer sovereignty, Raymond Ackerman rebuilt his father’s company. This ideology may have put him to the test, but it never failed him.

Gus Ackerman established the retail clothing business. The Greatermans group eventually bought the business. He looked into and examined brand-new, foreign-sourced approaches to food retailing.

Ackerman is born with a passion for retail. Before the market meltdown, his grandfather Louis traded ostrich feathers. Louis’ wife opened a store in Plum-stead, Cape Town, after his death.

Gus, the son of Louis, and two friends invested their wartime earnings in 1919 in a network of haberdashery shops that offered a lot of their goods for “one and eleven” – such as a lot of socks and yards of calico.
