Mathole Motshekga was born on April 2, 1949, in Modjadjiskloof, South Africa’s Limpopo province. His father worked as a ranger on a white-owned farm, and he had younger brothers and sisters. He enrolled in 1969 and worked as a clerk at the University of the North following graduation.

Motshekga was Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the ANC branch in South Africa’s new Gauteng province during the country’s first post-apartheid election in 1994. Mathole Motshekga served in that capacity until September 1997, when ANC Provincial Chairperson Tokyo Sexwale quit and Motshekga was elected to take his place. His election came after a fierce succession battle with numerous rounds of voting in which Motshekga defeated Amos Masondo and then defeated Frank Chikane in the last round of voting with 343 votes to Chikane’s 179.
