Biography & Wikipedia
David Goldblatt was a South African photographer known for his depictions of South Africa during the apartheid era. After apartheid ended, his work became more focused on the country’s landscapes, among other things.
David Goldblatt began photographing as a teenager, receiving his first camera from his father, who purchased it from Goldblatt’s brother, who returned from World War II with a damaged German Contax camera. Despite the fact that his first images were not groundbreaking, he enlisted the assistance of a wedding photographer. After a few years of honing his craft, he sold his father’s clothing store in 1963, which he had taken over when his father died in 1962, to become a full-time photographer. He documented events in South Africa from apartheid’s inception until its demise in the 1990s.
