Gabuza was born in Alexandra, South Africa on March 23, 1955. He was the youngest of six children. His father died when he was young, and his mother sent him to boarding school to keep him safe from the dangers of the local schools.

Abel Gabuza was a South African Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop Coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Durban from December 9, 2018, until he died in 2021. He was the Bishop of Kimberley from 2010 to 2018. Abel Gabuza was named Bishop of Kimberley by Pope Benedict XVI on December 23, 2010. On March 19, 2011, he was consecrated as an archbishop by Jabulani Adatus Nxumalo, Archbishop of Bloemfontein.
