Full Biography
Ramphele was born in the Bochum District of Northern Transvaal (now Limpopo) as a Mopedi. In 1966, she graduated from Setotolwane High School and enrolled in pre-medical classes at the University of the North. Rangoato Rahab, her mother, and Pitsi Eliphaz Ramphele, her father, were both elementary school teachers.
Mamphela Ramphele’s father Pitsi Eliphaz Ramphele was promoted to headmaster of Stephanus Hofmeyer School in 1944. Ramphele was three months old when she suffered severe whooping cough. Dominee Lukas van der Merwe, the wife of the local church minister, provided her mother with medical advice and purchased drugs for the ailing child, which saved her life.
