In the early 1960s, Eleanor Kasrils worked in a bookstore in Durban. In the aftermath of the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, she and Ronnie Kasrils were convinced to join Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1961, Eleanor Kasrils assisted Kasrils and others in stealing dynamite from a Durban construction site. She supported Ronnie Kasrils in evading house detention in 1963 and worked as a driver, courier, and fundraiser for exiled and underground activists.
