Full Biography
Ela Gandhi was born to Manilal Gandhi and Sushila Mashruwala on July 1, 1940, in Durban. Her father worked as the Indian Opinion’s editor. Ela was raised in a Phoenix Settlement ashram. She graduated with a B.A. from what was once Natal University and later earned an honors B.A. in social science from UNISA. After receiving her degree, she spent 15 years working as a social worker for the Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society and 5 years working for the Durban Indian Child and Family Welfare Society.
Gandhi established the Gandhi Development Trust after serving in parliament, created a 24-hour program to combat domestic abuse, is a member of the Religious Affairs Committee, and is in charge of a monthly publication.
