Ela Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter, is a peace campaigner who served as a Member of Parliament in South Africa from 1994 to 2004, representing the Phoenix area of Inanda in the KwaZulu-Natal province as a member of the African National Congress party.
Ela Gandhi’s contribution to politics and society is well acknowledged; Ela Gandhi got the Community of Christ International Peace Award in 2002. The Government of India bestowed the Padma Bhushan award on her in 2007. In 2014, Ela Gandhi received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, India’s highest honor bestowed to an abroad Indian. Ela Gandhi was also honored as a veteran of the Umkhonto we Sizwe in 2014.
