Her father, Moosa Meer, was the editor of Indian Views, a publication that fought both colonialism and the white minority rule of South Africa. She founded the Student Passive Resistance Committee while a student at the Durban Indian Girls’ High School to aid the Passive Resistance Campaign (1946–48) of the Indian community against new legislation that limited Indians’ access to land in South Africa.
