Full Biography
Zackie Achmat was born to a Muslim Cape Malay family (Zackie’s father Suleiman Achmat, however, his mother is unknown) in the Johannesburg suburb of Vrededorp and grew up in the Cape Coloured settlement of Salt River under apartheid. Zackie Achmat was raised by his mother and aunt, both of whom were Garment Workers Union, shop stewards.
Zackie Achmat did not matriculate but graduated from the University of the Western Cape in 1992 with a BA Hons degree in English literature and went on to study filmmaking at the Cape Town Film School.
